Gardner Plastic Surgery Details National Data on Cosmetic Surgeries in 2018
The number of Americans seeking to enhance their appearance and boost self-confidence through cosmetic surgical procedures increased by 1% in 2018. This increase marks the fifth straight year of growth. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, 1.8 million cosmetic surgical procedures were performed in 2018, a year-over-year increase of about 18,000.
The top five most popular cosmetic surgeries of 2018 were breast augmentation, liposuction, rhinoplasty, blepharoplasty, and tummy tucks. Breast augmentation and liposuction remain popular procedures by patients who seek out the cosmetic surgery expertise of Gardner Plastic Surgery. Dr. Paul M. Gardner and Dr. Leo M. Baccaro receive significant patient demand for the other top-five procedures, as well.
Surgical Cosmetic Procedures by the Numbers
The 2018 top-five surgical procedures account for more than 1,100,000 (61%) of the total 1,800,000 procedures among the 28 tracked by the ASPS. Combined with the 15.9 million minimally invasive cosmetic procedures performed in 2018, Americans spent more than $16.5 billion on cosmetic procedures during the year.
Liposuction experienced the largest year-over increase, with 258,588 (+5%) of these procedures performed from 2017. Breast augmentation experienced the second-largest increase, with 313,735 (+4%) performed. The number of tummy tucks performed came in at just over 130,000, about the same amount performed in 2017. Rhinoplasty noticed a small decrease at 213,780 (-2%) performed, and 206,529 (-1%) blepharoplasties procedures.
Buttocks augmentation with fat grafting (also known as a Brazilian Butt Lift) experienced the biggest year-over-year increase of all cosmetic surgical procedures; with 24,753 (+19%) performed in 2018. Conversely, buttock implant procedures (traditional butt lift), recorded just 946 (-28%) procedures performed. Pectoral implants saw the biggest decline, with only 700 (-29%) performed.
Other cosmetic surgeries experiencing increases include:
- + 18% — Hair Transplantation (23,658 performed)
- + 5% — Thigh Lift (10,100 performed)
- + 4% — Breast Lift (109,638 performed)
- + 4% — Surgical Lip Augmentation (30,859 performed)

Increased Trend in Mixing Surgery with Non-Surgical Procedures
Data from the American Society of Plastic Surgeon’s report—2018 National Plastic Surgery Statistics—points to an increased trend in “marrying surgical and non-surgical procedures together.” Board-certified plastic surgeons continue to find more innovative ways to meet their patients’ aesthetic goals. For example, using minimally-invasive filler techniques in conjunction with a surgical face lift to achieve the best results. The surgeons at Gardner Plastic Surgery have adopted similar trends, and the practice performs a full suite of non-surgical procedures, both on a stand-alone basis and in combination with related surgeries.
