Tips to Stay in Shape While You’re Stuck at Home

Exercise is Included as an “Essential Activity”
While the governor’s State of Emergency order encourages people to shelter in place by remaining in their homes, the order allows for the participation in recreational activities such as walking, hiking, biking, running, and swimming. So, by all means, take advantage of this by getting out and engaging in any of these activities at least once a day. Just be sure to follow the social distancing guidelines by not engaging in such activities within a large group and by maintaining at least six feet of space between yourself and other people.
No Gym?—No Problem
While the lockdown has forced the closure of health clubs and gyms, there are plenty of exercises that you can do in your home that don’t require the use of all that specialized gym equipment. Combined with that daily walk, run or bike ride, the following exercises can help you burn calories, tone muscles, and increase flexibility:
- Push-ups
- Leg lifts
- Toe Taps
- Burpees
- Step-ups
- Planks
- Seated dips
- Pull-ups
- Crunches
- Bridges
- Lunges
- Air Squats

Equipment Can Up Your Game
If you do have some equipment, or can otherwise get a hold of some, it can up your game and add even more power and versatility to your workouts. Basic gear such as yoga mats, resistance bands, dumb bells, steppers, and jump ropes add dozens of other new exercises that can help you maintain and tone your physique. And, naturally, you can up the stakes even more if you have, or can get, serious equipment such as a rowing, elliptical, stepper, or universal machine.
