Dr. Andrew Bonett Highlights Common Reasons Women Seek a Labiaplasty
If you’ve ever wondered what a labiaplasty is and why a woman might seek plastic surgery for the vaginal area, Dr. Andrew Bonett of Southwest Florida’s Naples Plastic Surgery is ready with the answers. As an award-winning board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Bonett specializes in performing labiaplasties in Naples, along with other delicate and complex procedures. Here is what he believes people should know about labiaplasty surgery and what benefits a woman might gain from getting one.
“Labiaplasty is a sensitive but important subject, as it involves the most intimate component of a woman’s body,” says Dr. Bonett. “On the one hand, most women are reluctant to talk about any potential irregularities concerning their sensitive areas. On the other hand, if a woman is experiencing pain, discomfort, or negative impacts to her self-consciousness due to labial issues, she should know about potential remedies so that she can make an informed decision about whether to pursue them.”
Dr. Bonett notes that women’s natural sensitivity about the vaginal area prevents many from seeking vaginal rejuvenation options, even if experiencing pain, discomfort, or embarrassment. He says this explains why the labiaplasty only ranks about 18th in the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) annual survey on most performed plastic surgeries. “If issues affecting the vulvar area were impacting a less emotionally sensitive part of the body,” says Dr. Bonett, “annual corrective surgery numbers would likely be way higher.”
Common Reasons Women Seek a Labiaplasty in Naples
“Every woman’s vulva is unique,” says Dr. Bonett. “And with considerable differences in size, thickness, shape, color, and symmetry of each woman’s labia minora—that is, the ‘inner lips’—they are as distinctly different as everyone’s face.” He adds that the labia minora can change over time due to aging, hormonal changes, and childbirth.
Whether because of hereditary or natural change, some women’s labia minora become enlarged, misshapen, asymmetrical, stretched, or otherwise change in ways that can affect their health and/or self-confidence. From a health and comfort perspective, Dr. Bonett says an enlarged or misshapen labia can cause numerous problems. For starters, he notes that an enlarged or uneven labia can cause discomfort or pain with certain exercises, particularly cycling, horseback riding, and running. This discomfort can also arise with clothing choices, as underwear, leggings, and other tight clothing might cause chafing and rashes. Dr. Bonett notes that larger labia are more prone to trapping moisture, which often leads to an increased frequency of developing yeast infections or urinary tract infections. “And there’s sexual discomfort,” he adds, “as excess labial tissue can get painfully pulled or twisted during intercourse.”
From a self-confidence perspective, Dr. Bonett says women tend to be concerned about labial enlargement when it creates a visible bulge in tight clothing or swimwear. He adds that “it can also impact their intimacy and relationships if they have to worry that any of these normal variations could be a turn-off for their partners.” In a related vein, he notes that enlarged labial tissue can make cleaning the vulvar area more difficult, potentially producing intimacy-impacting odors.
So, How Does a Labiaplasty Resolve Labial Issues?
“A labiaplasty rejuvenates the vagina by reshaping the labia minora,” says Dr. Bonett. “A surgeon can shorten the labial lips, make them more symmetrical, and help them fit snugly within the folds of the labia majora,” he says. “Our goal with each labiaplasty is to remove excess tissue, enhance symmetry, and sculpt an aesthetically pleasing appearance to resolve health and self-confidence issues.” He adds that labial surgery techniques are designed to preserve and enhance tissues crucial to sexual function, pleasure, and natural moisturization.
“All in all,” concludes Dr. Bonett, “our labiaplasty patients in Naples are thrilled with their results, both with improvements to their vaginal health and a boost in their self-confidence.”
